All The Cheap Thrill Seekers

Oh! So I remembered what I wanted to post about earlier. Okay. I need your help, flist. Because, here's the thing: though I managed to rack up a fair amount of sexual experience in my misspent well-spent youth, I did so while ALSO managing to bypass all the normal human mating/dating experiences. Especially the dating part.

So. Tell me about dating. Especially dating in high school. How does that even happen?

What the hell do people do on dates? I mean, obviously it varies by preference, but how do the night's events get decided? Like, assuming you guys just met and don't know each other's likes and preferences yet. Is the event part of the invitation, like "Hey, you want to go bowling some time?" or is it a crapshoot, where they come to pick you up (or you meet somewhere) and one person's picked the events and the other just has to like it or lump it?

In general terms, what constitutes a "good" date to you? Like, I probably wouldn't like clubbing as a first date, at least, because it's too loud to talk (my preference will always be talking over just about anything else) and after all that effort to look good, I don't want to sweat myself out (and I WILL sweat myself out on the dance floor). And it drives me crazy when people want to go to the movies--and a movie I WANT to see, at that--and then want to fool around the entire time. Movies are too damn expensive to waste them that way! Like drinking, I can do that at home for FAR LESS money and effort.

There's actually two relationships I'm trying to construct here; one is that of (more or less) high school sweethearts who go on to get married after college and the other is a new relationship between two people who are relative strangers to each other and have sex first and THEN try to get to know each other.

Your dating experiences are gladly solicited.

early 90s teen horror

the first book was about a girl who's cousin may be possessed. I can't remember much about it other than there was a big dog train to attack , but only when ordered by his owner - the lead character. there's was also a scene where a girl falls into a fast river and is rescued by a guy hanging upsidedown from a log over the water. and something about vultures, or vulture spirits.

the second was about a widowed man and his 2 daughters (one was nicknamed bug or tadpole). they move after their mother dies so their father can work on the stainglass at a cathederal. An evil spirit gets released and the younger sister is pulled into a stain glass window. the older sister rescues her by making a glass locket with some of thier mothers ashes in

3rd was about 2 children, brother and sister, who are sent on a mission in the Australian outback and end up being chased by timeslipped transported convicts.

any help appreciated!

Founding Rivals: Madison vs. Monroe, The Bill of Rights, and The Election that Saved a Nation is the first historical book written by author Chris DeRose. In the book he tells the story of the long-lasting friendship between fellow Virginians and future Presidents James Madison and James Monroe and how that friendship remained intact even when the two men were on opposite sides of political issues. He begins with a background of the two friends, sketching out their backgrounds. Madison, slightly older, short and unhealthy at times, follows the path of a thinker and a public servant. Monroe, the younger of the two, tall and athletic, has responsibility thrust upon him early in life with the death of his father. He leaves university to fight in the Revolutionary War where he is wounded at the Battle of Brandywine. Both men are respected by their fellow citizens and both strike up a friendship and a correspondence that continues even when they are on opposite sides of issues. The two men are a sterling example of how to disagree agreeably. They personify civility and exhibit an example that modern politicians could learn much from.

Founding Rivals

The book follows the two men through their early political careers, with Madison being the more successful of the two, while Monroe reluctantly pursues a career in law. The author describes how Madison tackles the problem of unifying a collection of states that have competing interests and where there is mistrust, knowing that unity is a necessary element of continued security. His research and recounting of what took place at the constitutional convention, including the debates and contrasting positions of the states and their representatives. He takes us through the process of how the constitution was ratified in the states, especially in Virginia where Madison was strongly opposed by the eloquent Patrick Henry. DeRose, who is an attorney and a political consultant, shows us how the art of political spin was alive and well in the late 18th century and he displays a keen insight for the political strategies at work in the various campaigns of the time.

The book reaches a crescendo as it describes the first congressional election in 1789 between the book's two central subjects: Madison the Federalist and Monroe the Anti-Federalist. The author describes how both are men of strong character, how both display mutual respect for one another and for the process and how their arguments attack one another's position, but never each other. Initially the district looks very favorable to Monroe, but Madison rejects the idea of running in a district that is not his home. DeRose regales us with tales of the two men traveling together for local meetings and debates and how this experience strengthened their friendship. He also points out the strategy used by Madison to overcome his political disadvantages by meeting the arguments of his opponent (such as their fear of rampant taxation) and by showing an awareness of the various regional and religious interests.

The author then takes us through Madison's first term in congress and how his advocacy skills were able to bring about the Bill of Rights. He even points out the portions of the Bill that Madison was unsuccessful in convincing the nation to adopt and why that was probably a good thing. The book concludes in an epilogue that follows the two men to their ends in which considerable achievement and a valued friendship are both appreciated.

Portions of this book can be slow reading at times, particularly the minutiae of the arguments at the various conventions and political meetings. The author does a nice job of tying all of this up into a wonderful picture of the journey from the unorganized chaos at the end of the Revolutionary War into the formation of a nation with a strong constitution. Those looking for something of substance to read will find it in this book.

VillaMayfair%20-%2053112.jpg

If anyone was up to the task of resurrecting the former Brasserie Le Coze space on Coconut Grove's Florida Avenue, which in the 90s was operated by Le Bernardin's Maguy Le Coze and her late brother Gilbert, it would be Villa Mayfair's executive chef Frederic Joulin. Mostly because of Federic's strong culinary pedigree from working in notable French patisseries, Joulin and his partner Timo Kipp received three stars from The Miami Herald's Jodi Mailander Farrell for Villa Mayfair, which opened last December. "Fortunately, Joulin's amazing culinary skills outshine the disco lighting and soundtrack". Farrell highlights Joulin's touch with his "French-infused American fare (that) commands it (attention) with perfectly seared steaks; a superb, herb-crusted rack of lamb with croute de tomate, and delicate pan-fried branzino with a flavorful salty, crisp skin." Because of his efforts at Villa Mayfair, "for the first time in 10 years, Florida Avenue deserves to be found again." [MH]

After J&G Grill received glowing reviews from both The Herald and The Sun Sentinel, Lesley Elliot of Miami New Times agrees with all the fuss claiming J&G "one of the best new fine-dining establishments to join the Magic City pack". When she tastes the initially assumed pedestrian Parmesan-crusted chicken breast, Elliot is converted to a believer in the ability of Jean Georges Vongerichten and his chef de cuisine in Bal Harbour, Richard Gras, to take "what's simple, what's expected, and then brushes the protein canvas with so much technique, so much straightforward flavor, and such perfection in the preparation." [MNT]

Up in Broward, Rochelle Koff of The Miami Herald finds "the new, sexier sibling to Fort Lauderdale's Tee-Jay" worthy of three stars. Open since February of 2011, Tee-Jay Thai Sushi has an extensive sushi menu and a huge selection of Thai and Japanese dishes. Koff's favorites came at the waiter's suggestion, specifically "mama's recipe" of Thai steamed dumplings, which are stuffed with ground steamed chicken, shrimp and shitake mushrooms. [MH]

Considered "a proper shrine for a proper oyster", PB Catch on Palm Beach, which opened late last year from the partners behind Pistache, is applauded by Liz Balmaseda at the Palm Beach Post for their fresh seafood that is "both simple and sumptuous, reflecting PB Catch's pedigree". Balmaseda rewarded PB Catch and chef Julien Gremaud an A for "his sophisticated touch".[PBP]

THE BLOGS: the food-e finds a hidden gem at Essensia in the Palms Hotel and Spa on South Beach in his seven second review. Food For Thought gives a taste of his "Frod burger" which was served at chef Daniel Serfer's Blue Collar in honor of "National Burger Month".

on becoming a partial porcupine, sort of

Our Space Acupuncture in Silver Spring, MD, is having $10 off your first visit with a coupon (from this printable flyer.)

This is a community acupuncture center -- the cost is far less than at a private practice. It's $15 to $40 (you choose how much, based on income/what you think it does for you), and the acupuncturist, Farris Johnson, has a master's in acupuncture; he is also the gentlest needle-wielder I've experienced in several years at several places. If you have been thinking of trying acupuncture, you might want to give this a try.

The center is currently in space in a house on a side street. Since it's a one-person operation, some of it is a bit self-service: most of the paperwork that a receptionist might hand you to fill out is on computer, you put your payment in a box on the door, and there's water and tea you can get yourself. But you get the same kind of personalized consultation and acupuncture that you would get anywhere else, and the lounge chairs are very comfortable.

(yes, this is me posting -- Farris has done acupuncture for me for the last several months. And he uses the smallest size of needles; most of the time I really can't tell that he's put them in.)

Vid: Blue Jeans (Sons of Anarchy)

Vid title:Blue Jeans
Fandom Sons of Anarchy
Music by:Lana Del Rey
Vid by: [info]saltwatergirl
Subject:Tara & Jackson
Duration & File size: 3:50 minutes, 80MB
File Type: .avi
Summary: The high were so high & the lows were low.
notes, download link & lyrics )

Panelists: Gregory Rihn, Alex Bledsoe, Kater Cheek, Catherine Krahe, Elizabeth Bear

One liner: Writers and readers talk about what they like and don't like regarding magical design.

The panel began with examples of magic systems that didn't work for the panelists. Several authors were mentioned, among them J.K. Rowling, Mercedes Lackey, George Lucas, and Gary Gygax. A particularly entertaining moment was Alex Bledsoe's description of the Force from mystic belief to scientific nanotech.

Kater was an advocate of magic needing to cost something. The panelists went back and forth on this. There was also some discussion on how magic affects the society around you, the relationships you have, and the consequences of magic in every society.

Kater preferred explanations of how a magical system worked. Cassie thought you could still have rational magic without explanation. Bear added that gaming magic has to be fair, but fictional magic does not.

Magic was broken down into several possible subsets:

Magic as a skill.
Magic as energy.
Magic from the gods.
Magic as technology.

Some discussion ensured about magic thwarting physics, or magic and the technological divide. An example was used of a match as technology not working in a magical world, and how that violated thermodynamics, which would then cause all sorts of trouble in the universe. The panelists had no problem mashing magic vresus technology.

Alex raised the issue of the role of the magician in the society. Cassie asked what is magic used for in the society. Kater pointed out that in some books magic isn't the same in all parts of a country. Also, what do the gods get out of magic, if anything?

Some other vital questions:

Does magic slow the development of technology?
If you are learning magic, what are you not learning?
How does the introduction of a new magic change a society?
Is magic aristocratic or hierarchical? Who is magic for?

Suggestions of trying to make magic different from the stream or conduit paradigm were encouraged.

Question of Time

Your Feminist Avengers Post 2: The Wasp

You gotta give Stan Lee credit for his progressive feminist writing. /sarcasm

Okay, so the Wasp did not have the most auspicious of beginnings. She was the socialite girlfriend of scientist Hank Pym, and the two of them were imported into the Avengers as a unit. Without Hank, you don't really have an entry point for Jan.

However, like any good scientist boyfriend, Hank decided that what every rich girl wants is her own flying suit, shrinking ability, and wasp stingers. A lot of guys would just buy jewelry, but Jan became the Wasp. Let's take a look at that early incarnation, shall we?

I don't care what you might think. Antennae are cool.

Insta Rec - Great Sam Vid

[info]ash48 just posted a new vid.  Very powerful.   From Sam's "maybe I could be saved" dialogue from Houses of the Holy.   Go here to give her thanks/praise.

The Well (9)

I Got My Rock Moves

My washing machine is fixed and hopefully another generation of management office workers has been taught their lesson about opposing me when it comes to routine maintenance. I may or may not have caroled "I drink from the keg of victory" while doing stuff around the apartment and I may or may not have commanded the cats and dog to bring me all the finest bagels and donuts in the land. I'll never tell. But I am stuck doing a LOT of catch up laundry.

I've reached the point of entanglement in a story where all I want to do is write. Which, on the one hand is epically AWESOME and wonderful. It's an involvement and synergy that I haven't felt in a really long time. A really long time. On the other hand, it leads to things like almost forgetting to take your cats to their scheduled annual exam (thank the gods for phone alarms!) or getting super cranky with your husband when he wants to do anything that's going to take you away from writing. This is not helped by the fact that, although he always SETS OUT to be supportive and non-intrusive, The Husband is rather like a pushy and spoiled puppy himself. (He's almost never on LJ any more; don't tell him I said that!)

Also: anyone that I owe tags on Words With Friends or Draw Something: I'M SORRY! I know I'm running slow. But I'm WRITING, guys!

The Husband really wants to see Piranha 3DD. To add insult to injury, it's not even playing in Frederick, it's out in Gaithersburg, which is not an insane distance away; it's definitely closer than how far we had to go see Tree of Life, rot its eyes, but as in the case of Tree of Life, it's an awful long way to go for a movie you're not going to like at all. :(

Okay, back to writing.

We are excited to share one of our fave stories from Shape here on FitSugar.

Cameron Diaz is one hot mama! All right, all right…so she may not be a mom in real life, but she does play one (and a pretty smokin’ one at that!) in her newest movie, What to Expect When You’re Expecting.

PHOTOS: Hollywood's 10 Most Frozen Faces

In the funny flick, the 39-year-old actress heats up the big screen by shakin’ her thang in a super-skimpy red sequined number-and all we can say is WOW! With a body that slammin’, she plays the role of a celebrity weight-loss guru and personal trainer perfectly.

13 Simple Ways to Amp Up Your Pushup

Her character becomes pregnant (and sports the cutest baby bump ever!) later in the film, but it’s impossible not to notice her signature ultra-sculpted shoulders and buff biceps to match.

So just how does the charismatic star get those amazing arms? We spoke with her long-time personal trainer (and incredible inspiration himself), Teddy Bass, to steal some of his secrets to a Diaz-worthy bod.

Park Changes

http://land.allears.net/blogs/guestblog/2012/05/be_aware_of_changes_at_disneys_1.html

AllEars.Net's Kristin Ford highlights changes within Disney's Hollywood Studios during Star Wars Weekends that might affect the way you tour the park. For example, the Disney Channel Rocks! street show is set up a little differently, and there's a one-way traffic pattern for guests exiting Tatooine Traders, who are directed down the ramp toward the Streets of America.

Now I know what YOU watch, too

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/o9ss85L7Ias/explore-historic-sites-with-world.html

I’ve always been fascinated by famous historic and cultural sites from around the world. When I was a child, flipping through encyclopedias while researching for school projects, the thought of exploring these sites was a distant dream. With the new Google World Wonders Project, that dream is now a little closer for students and others around the globe.

The World Wonders Project enables you to discover 132 historic sites from 18 countries, including Stonehenge, the archaeological areas of Pompeii and the ancient Kyoto temples. In addition to man-made sites, you can explore natural places: wander the sandy dunes of Australia’s Shark Bay or gaze up at the rock domes of Yosemite National Park in California.

World Wonders uses Street View technology to take you on a virtual trip to each iconic site. Most could not be filmed by car, so we used camera-carrying trikes to pedal our way close enough. The site also includes 3D models and YouTube videos of the historical places, so you can dig in and get more information and a broader view of each site. We also partnered with several prestigious organizations, including UNESCO, the World Monuments Fund, Getty Images and Ourplace, who provided official information and photographs for many of the sites.

We hope World Wonders will prove to be a valuable educational resource for students and scholars. A selection of educational packages are available to download for classroom use; you can also share the site content with friends.

World Wonders is part of our commitment to preserving culture online and making it accessible to everyone. Under the auspices of the Google Cultural Institute, we’re publishing high resolution images of the Dead Sea Scrolls, digitizing the archives of famous figures such as Nelson Mandela and presenting thousands of artworks through the Art Project.

Find out more about the project on the World Wonders YouTube channel, and start exploring at www.google.com/worldwonders.

Bandwidth on U.S. Navy submarines is practically a throwback to the era of Magic cards, Discmans, and the best Fresh Prince of Bel-Air episodes. To send and receive messages, the U.S. submarine fleet needs to rise to a depth shallow enough to raise periscopes and antennas. Aboard the USS Mississippi -- the Navy's newest sub, which gave Wired a four-day ride -- periscope depth is 60 feet. While there are exceptions to that rule, it sets up a basic tradeoff. To remain undetected and ready to complete their missions, submarine commanders have to be prepared for long periods of silence.
